Combat Corner Professional Anthony "Showtime" Pettis Moves One Step Closer to UFC Title Shot
Saturday at UFC on FOX 6 in Chicago’s sold out United Center Anthony “Showtime” Pettis not only silenced his opponent Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone ,but perhaps critics and fight fans, as he made short work of the “Cowboy”, extended his current win streak to three, and moved himself one step closer to the UFC lightweight title shot. Many thought this fight would be an all-out battle between two of the top strikers in the lightweight division but “Showtime” was simply too much for Cerrone. From the moment the fight began Pettis looked to be the aggressor as he tried to push the action displaying some excellent boxing and counter striking that looked to have Cerrone in trouble early. Pettis threw a crazy cartwheel kick that narrowly missed Cerrone’s head and then switched to a southpaw stance that clearly wasn’t what Cerrone had expected and it allowed for Pettis to capitalize by going to the body hard and opening Cerrone to attacks from everywhere including the off the cage knee that caught Cerrone in the face. Pettis quickly followed it up with a kick to the body while in the southpaw stance, which dropped Cerrone and ended the fight in the very first round. It is unclear yet if Pettis will get the next title shot but all signs seem to point that he is the next guy, and a possible Benson Henderson versus Anthony Pettis title fight could happen again in the near future, this time for UFC gold.
