Which gloves are right for me?

I get this Question everyday, so I figured I would write a blog about it.  I will explain the differences between the different types of gloves and the Pro's & Con's.

First off there are a couple categories when talking about gloves for mma training and fighting.  I usually break it into two categories Boxing & MMA.  Then further break it down into subcategories of Training, fight, sparring, bag/pad etc.

Lets start off first in the MMA category.  The first glove in any mixed martial artists bag should be a quality pair of leather mma training gloves.  Now when I say training gloves I mean gloves that have added protection for both the you and your training partners.  These gloves consist of multi-layered padding, extra wrist wrap length, thumb padding.  These gloves can be used for all aspects of training grappling, ground and pound, bag and pad work, training and sparring drills with a degree of restraint when striking due to the smaller size of the gloves (a pair of 16 oz. or bigger boxing gloves is recomended for all out striking sparring).  Below is an example of high quality mma training glove.

Pro MMA Training Gloves

Moving on to MMA fight gloves.  The name can  be confusing as these gloves should and can be used in training as well.  They should be used in training strictly for grappling, wrestling, jiu jitsu work to get used to wearing such a glove.  In a fight you will be wearing gloves, so get used to it.  These gloves are not meant for sparring or striking as they have very little padding and protection for either you or your training partners.

Now as for the fight gloves intended purpose, fighting.  A fight glove should fit snug but have enough room for a wrap as that is very important in preventing broken hands and wrist injuries during a fight.  The gloves should be made of  leather, and should meet what ever commission overseeing the fights standards and requirements.  Everyone has a diffrent idea of how they like gloves to fit and feel, so as long as it meets the guidelines above, the choice is yours.  Below you will see our Super Pro Fight Gloves and our basic Pro Fight Gloves.  These gloves meet all the standards listed above.  I prefer the super pro fight gloves.

Stay Tuned, Next week I will cover some more details of MMA Gloves including amateur fight gloves, things to avoid, and some examples.  I will also move into explaining Boxing gloves, the differences and purposes of sparring gloves, bag/pad gloves, and fight gloves..........
